It was interesting to see the great changes that have taken place since I left Summerseat 40 years ago. I was born and raised there, went to Rowlands school, played cricket for Brox and have nothing but happy memories living in Summerseat as a child. I travelled every day on the train to Peel Brow school in Ramsbottom.

We used to live at various areas in the village, Plantation View, Hill St, were just 2 of them.

A truly wonderful site!

I grew in up Greenmount and even as a small child wondered at the potent industrial archeology of the place. We were always in awe of the back 2 back houses and the derelict mills and the way that the history of the Lancs cotton industry was almost tangible here.

Although I did not find any relatives I thought that you have created an interesting and excellent site. I shall certainly return to it. My interest was in finding a Joseph Ward who was probably born on or before 1796 and married a Janet Easton in Leith Scotland in 1813. Of particular interest was a cryptic comment on the birth lines of one of his daughters, Margaret born 1823, which stated " See Coventry July 1824" I have yet to find out the meaning of the statement. There appears to have been a lot of Wards in Warwickshire so I suppose that there is a possiblility that there were distant relatives living there. Anyway thank you for an interesting couple of hours. Alex Ward

I was looking initially for something on the Lancashire cotton mills in the 1800's. My family, surname Brandon, all worked in the cotton mills around that time. The bonus came when I realised I was looking at a Ward family website. My grandmother, Ethel Palmer Ward, married my grandfather and became Ethel P Brandon, so I have a Ward line on my tree too.

Great website, thank you

This is a great website but here's a tip, do a page on the man who made history, Robert Owen It would help you understand who made changes.

My Reply

Hello Charlie,

many thanks for your entry and so glad that you liked the web site, shame you did not give me your email address, as I would have liked to have thanked you via email.

I take it you mean Robert Owen who was born on the 14th May 1771 & died 17th November 1858.

Who set up a business as a manufacturer of spinning mules with John Jones, and then bought four textile factories in New Lanark.

He stopped employing children under ten and reduced their labour to ten hours a day. The young children went to the nursery and infant schools that Owen had built. Older children worked in the factory but also had to attend his secondary school for part of the day.

Robert Owen did so much more, and I do agree with you that he deserves some space on my web site, and when I get some time, I will try to place some details on the site.
