Please take a look at the list of Surnames that we are researching, we have also included the Years and Area's.
If you have visited us before, you will know that we have two Ward lines in our family, as my grandfather Harold Edward Ward married a Florence May Ward in 1821. but we have still found no link in both these Ward lines, during our research we have found that the Ward surname was very popular in the Midlands area of the UK, and there are many, many families with this name, really does make our job a lot harder sometimes. Here we will give you some brief details of some of our ancestors, you can view our Pedigree Chart on our Family Tree, and we have also fully updated our Family Descendant Charts this October 2005, now there are 23 Charts to view, we do hope you find these interesting, and lets hope that you may see a name that you are researching, if so, we would love to hear from you. We know that my 4 x Great Grandfather, was a Samuel Ward, we also know that Samuel married a Mary Yardley at St. Martins Church in Birmingham, Warwickshire, UK on the 21st of Feb 1803. They had 7 children, namely – Martha b1805, Joseph b1809, Samuel (my 3 x great grandfather) b1810 at Harborne, James b1813, William b1815 and died at Kings Norton in 1876, and it looks that Joseph may have died at an early age, as they had another Joseph b1817, and John b1820. We have found this in a few of our ancestor lines, if a child dies very young the parents seem to name the next born child the same name. Now Samuel b1810 my 3xgreat grandfather, married a Martha Ward at St. Peters, Harborne, on the 4th of December 1831, we know that the witnesses to the marriage were a William and Mary Powell. Martha was a widow when she married Samuel. On checking the 1841 and 1851 census’s Samuel was an Agricultural Labourer, and they were living in Harborne. Martha was a widow when she married Samuel, Martha Ward nee Crockett. The 1881 Census shows Martha living with Daughter & Son-In-Law, (Thomas & Hannah Warner) at Basons End, Harborne, Stafford. UK. Further research found that Martha married a Daniel Ward on the 7th Feb 1825, at St Martin's Church, Birmingham, Warwickshire. UK. We also found that during this short marriage they had two children, Eliza, christened 5th of June 1825, and Samuel christened 8th of March 1829, both at Smethwick, Staffordshire, UK. Now Samuel married a lady called Ann. No further details as yet.
Martha Crockett was one of eleven children, and we have much information on Martha's sister Maria, who was born in 1812, and married a William Hemmings, you can find these details further down this page. We have managed to get back to my 6 x great Grandfather on the Crockett line, this was a William Crockett who was married to a lady called Mary, they had 4 children that we know of namely - William Christened 13th April 1744 at Coleshill, Warwickshire, then Ralph Christened 7th Feb 1746, Thomas, who was Christened on the 3rd of June 1748, John Christened on 8th Feb 1750, All christened at Coleshill, Warwickshire.
Samuel and Martha had 6 children, one of whom was Daniel b1832, this being my 2 x Great Grandfather, he married a Mary Ann, surname unknown. On checking the 1851 census, it stated that he worked at a Copper Works. They had 4 children that we know of - Emma b1855, Daniel b1858, Edward b1863 and Mary Ann b1866. The 1871 census shows Samuel and Martha living at Corbett Street, Harborne, Staffordshire, it also showed that he was living next door to his brother William. Daniel died in 1877 in Kings Norton, Staffordshire, at age 45. The
1891 Census shows Martha as being a widow living at 53, Corbett
Street, Harborne, Stafford, The 1901 census shows Emma still with her mother living at Corbett Street.
Now in June of 1884, Daniel Ward b1858 married an Emily Nock b1861, daughter of Thomas Nock and Emily, at Kings Norton, Staffordshire, they had 3 children. Edward Ward who was born in 1863 was my Great Grandfather, he was a Tool Grinder Overlooker, Edward married a Sarah Jane Hutchinson, who was born 12-1-1868 at Codnor, Nottingham, They got married at Kings Norton in 1889. We know that Sarah Jane’s parents were a William Hutchinson b1826 at Old Basford, Nottingham, and Emeline (Emily) Scott b1829 at Basford, Nottingham. William Hutchinson’s parents were a Benjamin Hutchinson b1781 in Nottingham and Dorothy Dexter, also born in 1781 at Nottingham. They got married 16th January 1809 at Basford. The 1841 census shows them to be living at Church Street, Basford, Nottingham, UK. Emeline’s parents were a Thomas Scott and Sarah Bagaley, Sarah was born in 1783 at Edingley, Nottingham. We have added more families on our Scott family name line, and you can see these on our Family Tree, as this has been updated this week and we have added well over 100 new names to our Tree. Well worth a visit. Hannah Ward b 1838 at Harborne, Staffordshire, and Christened on 15th July 1838 at Smethwick Parish Church, (daughter of Samuel & Martha). Hannah married a Thomas Warner, on the 1901 census they were living at 61, Poplar Street, Smethwick, Staffordshire, UK. Thomas and Hannah had 5 children. Thomas Warner was one of 13 children, and his parents were Thomas Warner b1811 at Alvechurch, Worcestershire, and Sarah (Nee Wilkes) b1816 at Redditch, Worcestershire. Thomas & Sarah Warner got married at Alvechurch on 10th August 1835, and on the 1851 census were living at 110 London Street, Alvechurch, Worcestershire.
Now going back to Martha Crockett's sister Maria. Maria was born in 1812 in Smethwick, Staffordshire, UK and was christened on 1 Mar 1812 in Smethwick, Staffordshire, UK. She married a William Hemmings on 23 Sep 1833 in St. Martins Church, Birmingham, Warwick. UK. William was christened on 20 Jan 1812 in St. Martins Church, Birmingham, Warwick. and his parents were a William Hemmings who was christened on 31 May 1787 in St. Martins Church, Birmingham, and Ann Hill, who got married on 5 Feb 1810 in St. Martins Church, Birmingham, Warwick. UK. They had four children. William who was christened in 1787 was one of seven children to John Hemmings and Mary Spicer, who got married on 11 Apr 1784 in Aston Juxta, Birmingham, Warwick. UK.
William Hemmings and Maria Lived in Smethwick, Staffordshire, Uk. before moving to London between 1834 & 1836. Probably working in the shipbuilding industry, as on checking the census records and the area's where his children were born, they lived around the dock area's between 1836 and 1851. Samuel Hemmings was born in 1843 in 23, Charles Street, Lambeth, London. UK and died at the age of 26 yrs, he was living at 88, handrige Street, St George in the East, London. he died of Typhoid. Samuel
had married Phillippa Johns, daughter of Richard Johns and Unknown, on 9
Nov 1863 in The Parish Church, Bethnal Green, London. UK. They had three
children: Richard Samuel, William, and John. George

Here is a brief write up on my Grandmothers side. I have been busy on the other Ward line, that I have no further update on this line, since our last update, but hope to have more information ready for the next update, which should be within the next few months. My 3xGreat Grandparents were Edward Ward and Ann, we know that they had at least two children namely a Thomas born 1819, and Edward born 14th Feb 1822 at Birmingham, Warwickshire, UK. Edward was my 2 x Great Grandfather, he married Fanny Bird, who was born in 1819 at Coventry, Warwickshire, UK they got married in 1848 at Coventry. We now know that they had 5 children - Margaret b1850, Mary Ann also b1850, Mark b1852, Benjamin b1854 and Emily b1857. All were born at Birmingham, Warwickshire. I found that Benjamin was a Tin Plate Worker on the 1871/81/91 & 1901 census's, also it was noted that he married a lady called Annie, up till 1901 they were living at Kings Norton, then on the 1901 census they were living at 4 Willow Place, Bordesley, Aston, Birmingham. On the 1851 & 1881 Census we found Edward and Fanny living at 354, Bell Barn Road, Birmingham, Warwickshire. Now Mark Ward b1852 was my Great Grandfather. He married a Matilda Newell on the 22nd March 1885, at St. Lukes Church, Bristol Road, Birmingham, Warwickshire UK (photo below). Matilda was a widow when she married Mark, Her first husband was a Henry Newell, they had 3 children Joseph, Samuel and Matilda. Her surname was originally Clayton. On checking the 1901 census we found Mark and Matilda living at 22, Bissell Street, Birmingham. Now Mark & Matilda had 7 children, Namely - Ernest b1886, Albert b1888, Florence May b1890 d1967(my grandmother), Lily b1892 d1985, Fanny b1896 d1974, and Alice b1900. My grandmother Florence May Ward, born 1890 at Birmingham, this is where our two Ward lines connect, as Florence married a Harold Edward Ward on 11th June 1921 at The Old Church, Smethwick, Staffordshire, UK and had 4 witnesses Namely - Ernest Ward, Richard Benjamin Nock, Lilly Ward & Madeline Ward. The Curate was - F r. Stanley Astbury.
St. Lukes Church, Bristol road, Birmingham. (Taken 1899)
We have quite a bit of information on the Bird family name, and Fanny’s parents were a Benjamin Bird b1774 at Stivichall, Warwickshire, (Stivichall being about 1 mile S.W. of Coventry.) and Susannah North b1777 at Coventry. Checking the 1841 census, we found that Benjamin was living at Spon End, South Side, Coventry, Warwickshire. We also found that they had 12 children, a few of these became Watch Makers and Finishers, you can see some interesting articles and more of our ancestors occupations on our Family Roots Page, so please make a visit after finishing here, as we are sure that you will find it interesting. We managed to obtain the Will that was made by Benjamin, who died on the 2nd Jan 1845, and this gave us some great information. Now we have Transcribed the actual copy of the Will, and you can view this and more Wills at - BMD Certificate Exchange Site, which is a new site that I have developed to help people pass on certificates that they may have bought in error, as I have done in the past, there are also many transcriptions of wills on the site, we will be placing links to many different sites throughout our site, so as you can visit and hopefully find useful information for your research. Also in our Research we found that one of our Bird ancestors spent the last few years of his life in The Coventry Workhouse. More details about life in the Workhouse, can be found on (Our Family Roots Page) Benjamin married Susannah North, daughter of John & Susannah North, on the 2nd March 1796 at St. John's, Coventry, Warwickshire UK. a full list of their children can be found on the 'Bird Family Descendant Chart'.

Now the following write up, gives you a bit of history on my Mothers side of the family. My 3 x Great Grandfather was a Jonathan Woolfendale, he was a Crofter, and came from Horwich, Lancashire, Jonathan married Betty Maken on the 9th of October 1810, at the Parish Church of Deane, Bolton, Lancashire. They had 4 children - William b1812, John b1814, Mary b1815 and my 2 x Great Grandfather John b1818. John Wolfendale, was Christened on the 1st Feb 1818 at Horwich, Lancashire, his occupation was a Husbandman, and he married an Ann Williams after Banns at the Parish Church of Deane, in the County of Lancaster. UK. The witnesses were Abraham Boardman and John Holt. The Curate was a Father Burdett. John and Ann had 2 children. (I plan to research this family more, and hope to have more details for you on our next update). One of these children was my Great Grandfather William Wolfendale, born 31st Dec 1844 at Commission Street, Great Bolton, Lancashire, UK on the 9th July 1865, he married a Mary Gerrard after Banns at The Parish Church of Farnworth with Kersley, in the County of Lancaster, UK. The witnesses were a George Martin and Ann Wolfendale. Vicars name was - W. H. Burns, Mary was born on the 13th April 1844 at Nelsons Lane, Farnworth, Bolton, Lancashire, UK. William and Mary had 12 children, these being - Jack, Molly, John b1865 d1942, Mary Ann b1867, Elizabeth Alice b1871 d1886, Sarah Ellen b1872 d1897, William b1883 d1955 (my Grandfather), Hannah b1877 and died same year 1887, Alice b1879, Richard b1881 d1882, Harry born and died in 1885, Emma b1887 d1888. All these are buried at Bury cemetery, Bury, Lancashire. One of their children William Wolfendale (my Grandfather) born 1st May 1883 at Wood Street, Bury, Lancashire. Williams occupation was an Iron Moulders Core Maker, he married Harriet Ann Chapman on the 25th July 1908 at The Primitive Methodist Chapel, Summerseat, Bury, Lancashire, A. J. Smith was the minister who married them. The Witnesses to the marriage were - A. Mercer and Eliza Collinge. The Registrar was a Richard Burley. Harriet's parents were a Thomas Edward Chapman b-1850 at Salford, Lancashire, and Maria Barlow b-1857 at Radcliffe, Lancashire. Thomas's occupation was a Cotton Mule Spinner, Thomas and Maria married after Banns at St John's Church, Stand Lane, Radcliffe, Lancashire, (photo below). UK. The witnesses were - Robert Chapman and Sarah Richardson. The Vicar was a W. D. Carter. They had nine children. On checking the census returns, we found that in 1871 they lived at Salford, Lancashire, then they had moved to King Street, which was at Stand, Radcliffe, Lancashire, on checking the 1881 census. Then looking at the 1891 census they had moved to Thorn Street, Summerseat, Lancashire. Thomas's parents were John Chapman b-1821 at Salford, Lancashire, and Jane Reece b-1819 at Oswestry in Wales. We found Jane's maiden name from Thomas Edward Chapman's birth certificate. The 1871 census shows John and Jane living at Short Street, Ordsall, Salford, Lancashire, and the 1881 census shows Jane as being a widow, living at Lower Rowlands, Walmersley Cum Shuttleworth, Lancashire UK with her two daughters and brother, Joseph. (Joseph is 50yrs old on 1881 census, occupation Joiner, and he was born in Manchester) The 1881 census showed us that Robert Chapman (born 1854 at Salford Lancashire) worked in an Iron Foundry, and he was living at Martha Street in Salford, Lancashire UK with his wife, Emily born 1858 at Dunham, Cheshire, UK. They had 9 children, and on checking the 1901 census, we found that Robert and Emily had moved to Square Street in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, this is only a few miles from where John and Jane Chapman had moved to at Rowlands, Walmersley Cum Shuttleworth, (the area of Rowlands now comes under Summerseat). Not forgetting Thomas Chapman and his family who had also moved to Summerseat. Many of our Chapman relatives worked in the cotton mill in Summerseat, and the house that they lived in at Thorn Street was in fact one of the houses that were built by the mill owner, these were rows of terraced properties that were occupied by the mill workers.
