We welcome you all to our Family pages.

We would like to Thank All the kind people

that have helped us so much in our research.

This page will give you some details of our research so far into my wife’s ancestors.

Don't forget to take a look at the list of Surnames that we are researching, we have also included the Years and Area's.

LOMAX is my wife’s maiden name, we have now managed to get back to

Christine's 2 x Great Grandfather William Lomax born in Little Hulton, Lancashire, in 1816. On the 1851 census he was living at Kearsley, Lancashire with his wife Mary, who was born in 1822, at Swinton, Lancashire. Williams occupation in 1851 was an engine driver, now we know from Christine's Great Grandfather Joseph's marriage certificate that William was an Engineer.

We also know that William and Mary had four children, namely Joseph (Christine's great grandfather) born in 1843 at Eccles, Lancashire - John born 1845 at Swinton, Lancashire - Elizabeth born 1848 at Kearsley, Lancashire - and Ann born 1850 at Kearsley, Lancashire.

Now his son Joseph, (Christine's Great Grandfather) was born at Eccles in Salford, Lancashire UK in 1843. When he was 21 he married Anne Atkinson, daughter of Thomas b1811, & Elizabethb1812, in The Parish Church at Eccles, Salford, Lancashire, this was on the14th of August 1864, after banns and the witnesses at the marriage were -George Burgess and Fanny Atkinson. Anne was 16 years old at the time. They had five children that we know of, these were - Thomas b.26th June 1865 at Clifton, Lancashire. d.7th Nov 1937 in Culcheth Hall, Newton Heath Manchester, and is buried at Weaste Cemetery, Salford (Christine's Grandfather), William b 1868, Elizabeth b 1873, Fanny b 1877, and Alice Anne b 1879.

Anne Atkinson was also born at Eccles in 1848. Now on the 1871 census it

shows that Anne's father Thomas was a Collier, and he lived with his wife at

Rake Lane, Clifton, Salford, Lancashire. The 1881 census showed Thomas as

being a widow and still living at Rake Lane.

Thomas Atkinson b1811 at Clifton, Salford, and Elizabeth b1812 at Pendlebury, Salford, Lancashire UK. Anne also had two sisters, namely Martha b 1839 and Fanny b 1842.

After doing a little searching of the 1881 census, we found that Thomas Atkinson was living at 3, Rake Lane, Clifton, Salford, Lancashire. Also living in Rakes lane was Joseph Lomax (Great Grandfather) and family, then just around the corner on Thomas Street we found Joseph's brother John born 1844, and his family. John was a coal miner like his brother Joseph.

We have also found that Thomas Lomax b 26 June 1865, had first married a

lady called Hannah b 1864 at Eccles, Lancashire, we know of four children

from this first marriage of Thomas's, they were - William b 1884, Elizabeth b

1887, Frances b 1890 and Thomas D born 1896, they were all born in Swinton, Salford, Lancashire UK. The 1891 census shows them living at Pendlebury Road Swinton, and on checking the 1901 census they were living at Stafford Road, Swinton, Lancashire UK, it shows Thomas's occupation as being a Coal Miner Hewer.

Now after much research we have managed to find out that Hannah died before 1909.

As we now know that Thomas's second marriage was to a Catherine Beech, formerly Lynch, the marriage took place on the 28th Aug 1909 at Salford Register Office, Lancashire, the witnesses were a G H Evans and an E Evans, as yet we do not know if there is a connection with the Evans family. On the marriage certificate, Thomas is shown as being widower, and Catherine was a widow.

Catherine's first husband was a Walter Beech, they married in 1902, and Walter died in 1906. Have not as yet found any children of this marriage. Hope to have more information on our next update.

Catherine Lynch was born in 1880 at Salford, Lancashire, (Obtaining the Birth Certificate within the next month).

We found Catherine with her family on the 1881 census, they were living at Borough Street cellar dwelling in Salford, Lancashire UK. Her father was a Mathew Lynch who was born in 1844 in Ireland, and her mother was called Sophia, who was also born in Ireland around 1845. Mathew's occupation at this time was a Horse Keeper. Catherine Lynch died at the age of 40 on the 21st July 1920, at this time Thomas and Catherine were living at Croft Street in Salford, where they ran a Fish and Fried Potato shop.

Catherine Lynch had 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Namely - Sophia b1867 in Ireland, Mathew b1874 at Salford, Lancashire, Mary b1882 at Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire and Alexandra b1886 at Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire. Thomas and Catherine had 3 children, Sophia b.1908 d.1983, then Joseph b.1912 d.1942, Now Joseph married a Maria, maiden name unknown, found that in 1937 Joseph and Maria were Living at 226 Chorley Road, Swinton, Salford, Lancashire. UK. Then in 1914 Christine's father Matthew was born at Salford, Lancashire, Matthew married Ellen Forrest in 1932 at Bury, Lancashire. Matthew sadly passed away on the 22nd January 2006, he was 91 years old, and is buried at Rowlands Methodist Church Graveyard, Summerseat, Lancashire.

Now here is a little of the family history on my wife's mothers line.

Christine's mothers maiden name was Forrest, we have really had many problems trying to get further than Christine's great grandfather Thomas Forrest, who was born in 1841, but after much perseverance and a lot of research, we found that Thomas was actually born out of wedlock and his mother did not appear to have got married, you can read more of this further in this section.

We have now managed to get as far back as Christine's 4 x great grandfather who was a Charles Forrest, he married a Mary Houghton on the 7th of October 1787, at Winwick, Lancashire, England. They had ten children, namely - William b.1788, Nancy b.1789, John b.1790, Charles b.1791 (Christine's 3 x great grandfather), Betty b.1794, Catharine b.1796, Thomas b.1798, Mark b.1800, Marey b.1804, and Margaret b.1805, All these children were born at Burtonwood in Lancashire.

Charles Forrest who was born in 1791, got married on the 26th of December 1814, at Warrington, Lancashire to a Lettice Turner b.1796 at fazakerley, Lancashire. The 1851 & 61 census's show them living at Crossfield Street, Windle, Lancashire, and Charles was a Stone Mason by trade. Charles & Lettice had 7 children - Mary b. 1815 (Christine's 2 x great grandmother), Thomas b.1817, Elizabeth b.1820, Jane b.1823, Ellen b.1825, James b.1828 and Charles b.1832.

Christine's 3 x great grandmother Lettice died in 1858, her husband Charles died in 1873 at the age of 82 years old.

Mary who was born at Walton, Lancashire in 1815, was Christened on 30th April 1815 at Walton On The Hill, Lancashire. In 1841 Mary had a son called Thomas Forrest, this being Christine's great grandfather, we found that Thomas was Christened on the 31st October 1841 at St. Helens, Lancashire.

After extensive research we found that Thomas married a Martha Sherrington, on the 25th November 1860 at The Parish Church St. Thomas, Eccleston, Lancashire. We acquired a copy of the marriage certificate, and this showed that Thomas's father was a John Anders, we have not been able to find any further details about this John Anders, the certificate also showed that Martha Sherrington was also born out of wedlock, and her father was a Robert Down. Martha was born in 1841 at Upholland, Lancashire. During their marriage, Thomas & Martha had 6 children. (Details can be seen on the Forrest Family Descendant Chart, on our Family Reports Page). On checking the 1881 & 1891 census's it showed them living at Rigby Street, Windle, Lancashire, and Thomas's occupation was a Gas Fitter.

Thomas Forrest (Christine's Grandfather) born on 19th October 1871 at 1 Court Westfield, Eccleston, St. Helens, Lancashire. Thomas was 20 years old when he married Mary Ann Leyland, daughter of William Leyland & Ellen Gerrard, in St. Helens Parish Church, (St. Mary's). They married on the 21st of November 1891. Mary Ann Leyland was born in 1873 and died on the 19th of June 1955, when she was 82 years old, she is buried at Ramsbottom Cemetery, Lancashire. They lived in the Parr area of St. Helens, Thomas & Mary Ann had 9 children during their marriage.

Thomas served in the Boer War, he went to South Africa in February 1900, and was with the 5th & 6th battalion, K Coy. Army militia Unit No 596. He was on garrison duty and arrived back home at St. Helens, Lancashire, England in 1902.

Thomas gained the rank of Lance Corporal, and served with the 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers when he fought in 'The battle Of The Somme'. Sadly Thomas was killed in action on the 1st of July 1916, he was 44 years old, and he is buried in the Serre Road Cemetery, France.

We have a lovely Scroll of Honour for him, which you can view by visiting the Military section of our website, (We have also given you a write up on both the Boer War and The Somme) we are sure that you will find it interesting.

Thomas Forrest's War Grave

Here is a little of our history on Christine's Leyland ancestors, we do know that her 3xGreat Grandfather was a William Leyland b1791, he married a Marjory, Surname unknown. We know they had 9 children, one of these being my wife’s 2xGrandfather Peter Leyland b1813 at St.Helens, Lancashire, UK. Peter married an Ann Marsh b1815, also at St.Helens, the 1841 census shows them living at College Street, Windle, Lancashire UK, then on the 1861 census they lived at 45, Crab Street, Windle. Peter and Ann had 12 Children. One of these twelve was a Henry b30-9-1852 at St.Helens, Lancashire married an Elizabeth Leyland b1-3-1853 at St.Helens. Elizabeth’s parents were a John Leyland b31-10-1824 at St.Helens, and Jane, surname unknown. John’s parents were a John Leyland b1801 and a Jane Marsh born 1800 at St.Helens, Lancashire. The 1851 Census shows that Jane was a widow living at Crab Street, Parr, St.Helens, Lancashire, UK. Now John and Jane got married 19-12-1824 at Lowe House Chapel, St.Helens, Lancashire UK. We found that most of our Leyland ancestors were Baptised and also married at Lowe House Chapel, which was Catholic.

Mary Ann’s (Thomas Forrest's wife) father was William Leyland who was born in 1845, at St. Helens, he was a coal miner, and married  Ellen Gerrard on the 7th Aug. 1864, at the Low House Chapel, St. Helens. Prior to the wedding, William lived at Crab St. Parr, and Ellen lived at Chorley St. William had 3 brothers – John b1857, Henry b 1852, died 1901 and Peter b 1855, and also 6 sisters - Catherine b1860, Margaret 1841 - 1886, Elizabeth b 1848, Ellen b 1838, Mary b 1836, Esther b 1846.

Now Ellen Gerrard was born 30th of December 1846 at Pottery Street, Green Bank, St. Helens, Lancashire UK. Her parents were James Gerrard and Hannah Platt. James Lived at Chorley St. St.Helens, Lancashire UK in 1864, but must have died before 1864. This info. Came from the marriage certificate of Ellen Gerrard.

Margaret Leyland b 1841, married a Ralph Fairclough b1840 at St. Helens, we know that they had two children namely – Josiah b 1879, and Ralph b 1876, Ralph married a woman named Lucy b 1877, surname unknown. Ralph and Lucy Fairclough had two children – Another Ralph b 1897, and James who was born in 1900. Unfortunately Ralph died when he was three years old in December 1900.

During our research, we found a Family Grave at St. Helens Cemetery, Section 23 Grave No 193. Here we found that Ralph Fairclough and his wife Margaret (nee - Leyland), were buried and also in the grave were – Ralph fairclough and his wife Lucy (Maiden name unknown), together with their son Ralph who died aged 3yrs old, and also Ann Leyland (nee – Marsh) who was Margaret Leyland’s Mother, now Ann died in September 1892 aged 77yrs.

We have found the burial places of quite a few of the Leyland ancestors, but as yet have not managed to find where Peter Leyland b 1813, Ann’s husband, is buried.

Also the majority of our ancestors from St.Helens were either Coal Miners or they worked at the Glass Works.

(Some great write-ups on our ancestors occupations can be found on Our Family Roots Page).

Ellen Forrest  1913 - 2002

Now Christine’s Mother Ellen Forrest was born at St. Helens, Lancashire UK, but moved to a village called Summerseat, which is just North of Bury in Lancashire UK, when she was very young. Now when Ellen was in her 80’s, she began to write about her childhood days in Summerseat, unfortunately she never got to finish her work, if you would like to read this small piece, MY LIFE AS A CHILD IN THE BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE OF SUMMERSEAT. We are sure that you will enjoy it, there are also some good pictures of Summerseat, Past & Present, on the same page, and also on our 'Then & Now Page'.

Also please visit our 'Summerseat Photo Gallery', some lovely photo's of the village of Summerseat, Lancashire.

I have also just transcribed the 1841 & 1871 census's for Summerseat, these can be viewed in the Summerseat Section of our site.
